I know the feeling; it is the feeling of utter defeat before you have stepped out of bed. You feel so weighed down by life’s problems that you don’t think you can sit up. All you want to do is hide under the covers, and ignore the elephant in the room.
You are sinking fast, and you don’t know if you have the strength to swim to the safety of shore. The day looks bleak, and the road rocky. You want to throw in the towel, and you want to quit! You are tired, you are hurting, and you are done getting beaten down by the world. You search for hope, but hope is nowhere in sight…
Seeking out hope in the darkness of life, can feel like you are searching for a needle in a haystack. The hurt and sorrow that has taken root in your soul has choked out the hope and joy that you so desperately need. “Why?” You cry out, “Why me? Why this? Why today?”
I hate these days, and I know how hard it is to spot the truth through the lies that Satan has set before us, like a lavish feast.
“Taste,” He cajoles, “It will make you feel better, and soothe the pain in your heart.”
In total honesty, the feast of lies looks so enticing, but I know better. The sweet taste of these lies lasts but a moment, and then it is gone, leaving you feeling more miserable, and empty than before.
It is then, when I am at my lowest point, that God reveals to me the truth that my parched soul has long forgotten. These are the truths that have sustained me through the challenging times in my life. They are the truths that have sustained Christ’s most devoted disciples, and they are the truths that will sustain you in the storm. These truths are:
#1 God Will Never Leave You
When the darkness threatens to overtake you, it is easy to lose sight of God. We wonder why He has abandoned us, forsaken us, and left us on our own to deal with our problems. He has never, and I repeat, never, ever left us. It may have felt like it, but He hasn’t, and He never will.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.
#2 He Is In Total Control
This is the one that I struggle with the most, mainly because I like to be in control! I hate relinquishing control (even to God). It is something that I have been trying to work on, but it has not been easy.
It has been hard, but I am (slowly) allowing myself to step out of my comfort zone, to take a risk, and trust that God is in control. He knows what is best for me, and only He knows what lies ahead.
No matter what is dragging you down, I encourage you to give it to God and trust that He is working all things together for your good. (Romans 8:26)
“Do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable are you than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?”
#3 He Is Your Rock
In a world that is constantly changing, it is easy to feel displaced and lost. What once was as clear as crystal is now blurry, and distorted. You look frantically around, desperate to find someone/something you know, but nothing is familiar.
God is unchanging, constant, and eternal. He will never dissipate like the morning fog. He will always be there for you, and He will always be God.
No matter what changes around you, know that your God is unchanging, and is the rock which keeps you grounded.
Bottom line, the world changes, but God never does.
“I the Lord do not change…”
You may be down, but you are not out. God is your rock, He is in control, and He will never leave you. Surrender your defeat, and your desolation to the Lover of your soul. He knows your needs, and will never let you down.
I know it hurts right now, but your hurt won’t last forever. Look to Christ, and cleave to the truths that have sustained many of His most devout followers. You will get through it, and remember, it is always darkest before the dawn…
